Short description

This project will research continous variables (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD), bridging lab research with technological development to bring CV systems closer to market. There are stumbling blocks and we will address several of them. The most important is related to the reconciliation and parameter estimation, the main problems to reach long distances. We will address them using innovative techniques derived from our recent work in DV key distillation. Also, the feasibility of very long distance CV links using satellites has been recently established. We will investigate free space CV by building a system starting from our recent high speed DV optical platform. The novel key distillation algorithms will be implemented using specialized HW for speed and integration in a complete system driving engine to allow fiber sharing and the integration into modern network infrastructure specifically with the SW defined Networks and Network Function Virtualization paradigms.

Short description

Quantum cryptography is the only known method able to distribute an informationally secure secret key. Two partners connected through a quantum link can produce a key that, to any certainty level desired, is secure. This security is based on the laws of physics, in contrast with common methods like RSA based on unproven assumptions in computational complexity. However, this does not imply a trouble-free technology, since not only the manipulation and transmission of the extremely weak single quanta is a very demanding task, but also the laws of nature impose limits on what can be achieved. As a result, it has a basic point to point structure with links limited in distance (absorptions). To fulfill its potential, a network must be done out of them. To overcome the distance problem, there are only two approaches: either quantum repeaters or trusted repeater nodes. Today, the only feasible approach is the second. Trusted repeaters know all the keys that pass through them, weakening the security of the network. To alleviate these problems, we propose a weakly trusted repeater network model that, based on network coding, can force the attacker to simultaneously break all possible links if he wants to get access to the key. This significantly improves both, the security and resiliency of the network.

Short description

Quantum cryptography is the first and most successful applications in quantum information processing and communication. We are strongly focused on technological applications, aiming at the deployment of a cryptographic system that integrates with existing telecom networks, and the development of new key distillation schemes and routing algorithms.

Short description

The aim of this project is to develop a prototype metropolitan quantum key distribution (QKD) network that will be ready for deployment by Telefónica on any Spanish urban telecommunications network. The QKD network coexist with traditional communication networks. The prototype intends to structure a QKD network using a metropolitan ring and serving a number of end users through an access network, that will use quantum links on the conventional network infrastructure.

The project partners form a consortium of twelve companies and fifteen public research institutions, including the UPM's School of Computing, led by Telefónica I+D. The project has a budget of 31 million euros.
